Living with myositis (specifically polymyositis in my case), an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation and weakness of the muscles, is an incredibly challenging journey. But the physical symptoms are just part of the story. Many people with myositis and other autoimmune diseases often face considerable mental health challenges that can be just as debilitating. Yet, it's inspiring to see the resilience and strength of these individuals as they navigate these challenges. It's important that we, as a community, provide the necessary support and understanding to these individuals.
So, what exactly is myositis? Myositis contains a group of rare autoimmune diseases that cause muscle inflammation. Different types include dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and inclusion body myositis. The symptoms can vary widely, but shared experiences include muscle weakness, fatigue, and pain. Daily tasks become tremendous challenges for many, leading to frustration and helplessness. In my personal experience, I suffered from severe muscle wasting and weakness in my legs, arms, and even my throat muscles, which eventually led me to have to use a walking cane and choke on my food and water for several months because of the weakness in my throat muscles. This not only affected me physically but also took a toll on my mental health, leading to feelings of isolation and anxiety.
I just spoke of the physical aspects of the disease, but I would like to talk about the impact of myositis on mental health. Chronic illness often brings about feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. The unpredictability of flare-ups can create a constant state of worry, making it difficult to plan for the future or even engage in social activities. Here are some ways in which myositis can affect mental health:
1. Isolation: Many people with myositis find it hard to participate in social gatherings or even maintain relationships due to their physical limitations. This isolation can lead to feelings of loneliness and sorrow. For instance, I often found it difficult to keep up with my family activities or even go out for a simple dinner, which made me feel left out and lonely.
2. Anxiety and Uncertainty: The unpredictability of autoimmune diseases can lead to anxiety. Will I have a good day today? Will I be able to keep up with my responsibilities? Those are some of the questions that someone dealing with myositis and other autoimmune diseases constantly asks themselves. This ongoing state of uncertainty can be mentally exhausting.
3. Depression: The combination of physical limitations and the emotional toll of dealing with a chronic illness can lead to depression. It's important to remember that feeling depressed is a valid response to the challenges faced.
4. Identity Crisis: For many people dealing with a chronic illness, an autoimmune diagnosis can feel like losing a part of themselves. People often struggle with their new identity, which can contribute to a decline in self-esteem and overall mental health.
So what's the solution? While the challenges are noteworthy, there are ways to manage the mental health aspects of living with myositis:
Embrace Support: Engaging with others who share your journey can be a game-changer. Whether it's through online platforms or in-person meetings, support groups offer a nurturing environment to exchange experiences and emotions. I found immense comfort in Facebook groups when I was grappling with polymyositis. There are also local support groups and national organizations that provide resources, information, and a sense of community for individuals with myositis.
Therapy: Don't underestimate the power of professional help. After years of struggling alone, I finally turned to therapy. It's a resource that can equip you with coping mechanisms, emotional reinforcement, and a safe space to navigate the emotional baggage of chronic illness.
Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as yoga, meditation, self-care days, or even simple breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety and improve mental clarity.
Focus on What You Can Control: It's easy to become overwhelmed by the aspects of life that feel out of control. Instead, focusing on short, achievable goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and renewed optimism.
Educate Yourself: Understanding your condition can empower you. Knowledge about myositis and its treatment options can help lessen fear of the unknown and promote better communication with doctors, giving you a greater sense of control over your situation. By taking an active role in your health, you can feel more empowered and in control of your journey with myositis.
Living with polymyositis and other autoimmune diseases is challenging, but it's necessary to recognize the mental health implications that accompany these physical struggles. Remember, you are not alone in this journey. By actively seeking support, prioritizing mental health, and developing coping techniques, you can navigate the complexities of your condition and find a path toward a more fulfilling life.
Your experience matters and your feelings are valid. Welcome the journey, seek connection, and always remember that hope and healing are not just words but real possibilities. By staying hopeful and open to healing, you can find the strength to navigate the challenges of myositis and live a fulfilling life.
